What is Stress?

Stress is a normal part of life and in some instances can be positive such as the buzz of excitement or the sense of concentration which helps you to do your best when faced with a new of challenging situation such as an interview.

On the other hand stress is very negative when it is a sense of anxiety, fear, depression or tension you experience when you feel you cannot cope. These experiences occur when there is a confliction between the demands placed on us and our perceived ability to cope with the demands. It is the difference between how we view the demands and how we think we can cope with the demands that determines whether we feel no stress, “good” stress, “bad” stress. Often a person may not be aware that they are stressed as the pressures they are under have become an everyday occurrence and it takes a friend, relative or a doctor to notice the warning signs. Stress is the biggest killer of our day and is the highest reason for absenteeism in the work place.
The body’s reaction to stress is commonly known as the flight or fight response. Primitive man had to respond quickly to a physical threat if he was to survive. He had a system that would trigger a response to danger and protect him immediately.
